WHAT IS A REGGIO INVITATION TO PLAY?
A Reggio Emilia-inspired invitation to play is a thoughtfully designed activity or setting that encourages children to engage in self-directed exploration and imaginative play. Rooted in the Reggio Emilia philosophy, which emphasizes the importance of the child's interests and agency, these invitations are crafted to spark curiosity and foster meaningful learning experiences.
Sorry in advance if they are a tad blurry to some printers, i had to compress which pixalated my original leaf photos :)
Key Features of an Invitation to Play:
Child-Centered Design:
Invitations are tailored to the interests and developmental stages of the children, allowing them to take the lead in their exploration.
1. Open-Ended Materials: The materials provided are often versatile and can be used in various ways, encouraging creativity and problem-solving.
2. Rich Contexts: Invitations may be set within a themed or contextual backdrop that relates to children's experiences or current interests, enhancing engagement.
3. Encouragement of Collaboration: These settings often promote social interaction, allowing children to work together, share ideas, and learn from one another.
4. Fostering Inquiry: The open nature of invitations encourages children to ask questions, make choices, and pursue their inquiries, deepening their understanding of the world around them.
5. Purpose of invitations: The primary goal of an invitation to play is to create a rich, immersive environment where children feel inspired to explore, create, and connect with others. It supports holistic development by integrating cognitive, social, and emotional learning. In summary, Reggio-inspired invitations to play are vital components of an engaging learning environment, promoting exploration, creativity, and collaboration while honouring children's voices and interests.
Directions:
Cut out each flashcard around the borders, and setup on your provocation/craft table with NATURE INSPIRED loose parts and craft pieces, think: different coloured autumn leaves, dried flowers, twigs, seeds, feather ect. Set these up in little jars or wooden bowls and get children to come investigate and create their OWN VERSIONS of each of the images on the flashcards ( the idea of provocations, is for children to create their own visions) using any materials they choose, the flashcards are just for guidance and to “provoke and invite thought and creativity
