So for those of you who don't know, we are an unschooling family living on a small island out in the ocean. I let my children learn by following their curiosities, no matter what they may be. I believe that children deserve to be allowed to learn at their own pace and learn things that they find interesting. For I myself know just how much of the things I was forced to learn at school, I didn't need in my adulthood, I have forgotten long ago or that I have taught myself now as an adult through self-research and on the spot learning when I have become interested in something.

so now I choose to allow my children to live a life of discovery, a life of self-direct learning and we take a natural approach to their education. Unschooling isnt just about trusting your child enough to learn all they require, unschooling is more about trusting yourself to forgot what you think your child needs to acquire.
Unschooling is about detaching yourself from "the box" because our believe system has been shaped for most of our life's to believe that, in order for a child to succeed in life, A child needs to go to school, they need to learn every little possible thing ,that really is not relevant for their own life's or interests, and they need to learn these things within a certain timeframe in order to be successful, to be smart, and to be what society has labelled "a good student" .
When truthly 90% what we learn in school, we do not need in our adulthood,
we are in a new era where anything we want to learn is easily available online, just how much have you learnt as an adult ? through self- research and in the moment learning you were able to teach yourself these things you have been curious about like.... unschooling for one! A quick google search, ... How long to boil eggs, ?how many weeks in a year,? how many ounces in a cup,? how to make slime ? We are all Naturally learning, we are all so called "unschooling" . We dont want to sit behind a desk ,fill out worksheets ,waste hours on learning about it from a textbook, only to find out a perfect boiled egg takes 6 minutes to cook.
See we take up passions and hobbies some of us learn how to cook, sew, kayak, sail, garden, and some learn pottery, influencing, canning, fermenting, a new job role, pregnancy and parenthood, and so much more, we are forever self-researching and "teaching ourselves", we are lifelong learners and we are driven by our curiosity to self-research or seek out help from others in the field to learn more about these passions, and this is EXACTLY what unschoolers do.
(Curiosity is the natural instinct that implies wanting to know more about something through research and interaction)

How much has a quick google search, or a rabbit hole deep dive not only satisfied your curiosity, but you walked away with so much information that you will remember because you were passionate about it in the first place! - Its been proven that the brain’s chemistry changes when we become curious, helping us learn and retain information.
I for one ,attended school , spent half my time skipping classes and the other half talking to friends. I left school when I was 14, school just wasn't for me. I could not sit still for hours, told not to talk to my friends, told not to help my friends, I could not focus on learning about civil war when my mind was thinking about painting, I wanted to be outside spending my days in the sunshine not stuck behind four walls.

That being said, I now own my own online stores, I am our family's main income provider and we are able to live the life we want , why? because I became curious.I started researching online, google, youtube videos, I found a course, I read blog posts, I became passionate and taught myself everything I needed to know, I didn't go to college, I didn't get diplomas or business certificates, I didnt get mentorships or even ask for help and I'm defiantly no one special, I just followed my curiosity and naturally taught myself and here we are. I'm still constantly googling how to's, I'm still teaching myself new business skills , there is still so much to learn and so much I want to learn, will I go to school to learn these? No, if I went to school to learn these things, they would break everything down into little modules, they would make me fill out worksheets, give me tests and grade me. They would start teaching me the history of the internet, the hows and whys of blogging, ins and outs of digital products, they will break the unfathomable magic of my passion down into things called subjects.I will not only lose my love to want to learn but lose my soul in the process. I dont want to be told how and what to learn or shown over hours, days, weeks. I want to work at my own pace, however quick or long it takes, I want to find the answers to my questions and if i dont agree with them i want to look for other answers,I want to dive deeper into certain topics, and gain a full understand of what it is I want to know, not what the schools think I should know first.

and hence thats why my children are free to pursue their own interests, learn at their own pace, self research, seek help when they need, dive deep into curiosities, have hands on opportunities , and on the spot learning, thats why my children will never go to a school, and why I believe it's important to be allowed to learn how, what, when they like. Thats why I let them live with learning freedom as unschoolers.

Just because we are unschoolers, doesn't mean we get to just drop of the education departments systems ( well not in Australia anyway) Each year I have to create a learning report for that previous year and a learning plan for the new year for all three of my unschooling children,to meet our homeschool regulations and not get "in trouble" below are both my sons GOVERNMENT APPROVED unschooling reports and plans for this year 2024/2025, if you haven't you can view my 12-13 year old daughters here .
I have to give answers to certain questions they ask on how and what my children learn or will learn for the previous year and the year ahead.I like to use the same template for each and change them around to suit is individual child.
I hope these help give you a better idea just how we as unschoolers learn from living as most only would on a weekend.- free. How my children learn naturally, and just how easy it is to see that everything your child does is a form of learning one way or another.
